Church of Santa Maria del Mare
Lignano Sabbiadoro
In the large green area that separates Sabbiadoro from Pineta (now owned by Bella Italia EFA Village) there is the Church of Santa Maria, one of the oldest buildings in Lignano Sabbiadoro, dating back to the 15th century.
Originally located in the nearby town of Bevazzana, on the left bank of the Tagliamento, in the years 1965-1966 it was rebuilt in its current position, as it was about to be swept away by the disastrous flood of the river.
The frescoes that adorn the church are very interesting, dating back to a period close to the 15th century. Some sculptures by Giovanni Antonio Pilacorte are also preserved in the church.
A curiosity has it that the ghost of Pope Gregory XII hovers between the walls of the small church of Santa Maria del Mare. The legend is linked to the episode according to which, chased by the militias of rebel feudal lords, the Pope took refuge in the small church of Santa Maria before embarking towards the open sea.
