Itinerary No. 7 – The Path of the Dawn
Lignano Sabbiadoro
Starting from the bocca di porto, which connects the sea to the lagoon, this route is watched over by the Red Lighthouse, a beacon that has long guided sailors safely. Each morning, the sun rises right by the lighthouse, embracing the city, and on the day of its solstice, Lignano dedicates the Music of the Dawn to the sun—a propitiatory ritual for a summer of holidays and well-being. Walking along the shoreline offers many moments of wonder: the Villino Zuzzi (1910), the city’s finest example of Liberty-style architecture, and just a bit further, the Terrazza Mare, a symbol of a city that owes its fortune to the sea and the sun. Continuing near Ufficio 16, a beachfront bar shines in yellow in honor and memory of Giorgio Scerbanenco, the first great Italian crime novelist, who used to write his works at the Bar Gabbiano during the time he lived in Lignano with his family. The route ends at Ufficio 19, where the promenade takes a wide curve, leading you into the Pineta (Pinewood).
BIODIVERSITY Along the shoreline, you can spot typical seaside fauna, including crustaceans and mollusks. The birdlife is mainly represented by seagulls, particularly Larus michahellis (the yellow-legged gull) and Chroicocephalus ridibundus (the black-headed gull).
The cycle and pedestrian path runs on natural ground with a crushed limestone surface. It is accessible to people with reduced or limited mobility and is equipped with benches for relaxing breaks. There are several refreshment spots along the way, with more available nearby, especially during the summer season. The route also features green spaces with swings, slides, and playgrounds, as well as a fitness area for the more active visitors. To put it into perspective, walking from one end of the route to the other requires no more than 10,000 steps—before you inevitably reach either the sea or the lagoon. To fully enjoy this charming and evocative tourist destination, every step through the city becomes a real “s-passo”—a playful pun meaning both “a walk” and “a fun time”—helping you keep your body moving. Just pick a path, immerse yourself in the nature, scents, and atmosphere, and you’ll discover the unique features and hidden corners of Lignano.
