Itinerary
Itinerary No. 5 - Along the Freshwater
Lignano Sabbiadoro
From the water pumping station next to the Marino Uno shipyards in Lignano Riviera, a pedestrian and cycling path begins, following the winding course of the Tagliamento River, the "King of Alpine Rivers," which marks the natural border between Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto. The quiet road meanders through shrubs, poplars, tamarisks, and other native plant species. To the left, the natural beach embraces the water, still fresh before merging with the sea. The route continues upstream to the Bevazzana Canal, the ancient Venetian coastal waterway, which once served as a historical water route, separating the Lignano peninsula from the inland fields. This journey takes you through the history of a still unspoiled natural environment.
BIODIVERSITY The meeting of freshwater and saltwater creates a unique environment, often shaped by the tides that partially push saltwater upstream along the river’s course. The pine forest, with its clearings, is home to numerous plant and animal species. Among them, a remarkable presence is Zerynthia polyxena (the Southern Festoon), a beautiful butterfly from the Papilionidae family. This species is protected at the European level by the Habitats Directive 92/43/EEC and the Bern Convention. However, it sometimes falls prey to the Phoenicurus ochruros (Black Redstart).
The pedestrian and cycling path, with its paved surface, is accessible to individuals with reduced or impaired mobility and is equipped with benches for a relaxing break. The route passes by refreshment areas, with additional options available in the surrounding area, especially during the summer season. To put things into perspective, reaching any point from the farthest end of the path requires no more than 10,000 steps—beyond that, one inevitably encounters the sea or the lagoon. Exploring this enchanting and picturesque tourist destination on foot will be a true pleasure, allowing visitors to stay active while enjoying the surroundings. Simply choose an itinerary and, while taking in the nature, scents, and atmosphere, discover the unique features and hidden corners of the city.
